Emmanuelle Lyon, instructor in classical dance, anatomy and movement analysis, at the principal French teaching institutions for dance: the Paris Opera, the National Center for Dance, the National Center for Contemporary Dance, and the National School for Circus Arts.
Robin Lyon, artist and artisan, is a luthier, sculptor and cabinetmaker. His workshop is located on site at Le Batut.
Christine Morquin, after having collaborated with artists, professionals and the public in a variety of roles central to Paris’s Théâtre de la Cité Internationale, now devotes herself to developing l'Essieu du Batut.
A professional team that brings their knowledge and experience to support both artists and the local region.
Emmanuelle and Robin Lyon fell in love with the region of Haut Rouergue and have now been based in the hamlet of Le Batut, in the municipality of Murols, for several years.
When Christine Morquin joined them there one summer, they dreamed together of a place dedicated to artists and artisanry, a place of creating and passing on, a place of community and conviviality.
To make it possible to generate projects and events, they created the association L’Essieu du Batut in November of 2011.
From 2012 to 2105, they developed links with municipal governments, created performances for summer festivals, and organized residencies on site at Le Batut or in nearby performance spaces.
In 2016, after many ups and downs, Robin and Emmanuelle completed construction of a sunlit performance studio with hardwood floors on the Batut site, measuring 150 square meters with spacious 6-meter ceilings.
This project, coming out of a strong sense of place and aiming to revitalize not only the region but also the artists who visit it, is now ready to develop further. As of May 2016, l’Essieu du Batut began accepting its first artists in residency.
The association l’Essieu du Batut offers residencies in a remarkable natural space. Located in the hamlet of Le Batut 30 km south of Aurillac, a work studio built in 2016 and a renovated guest house are ready to receive your research projects in circus arts, theatre, dance, writing… The natural surroundings along with the immediate proximity of the creative studio and lodging combine to give the ideal creative conditions.
The residence period for 2018 is from April to the end of October.
Residency projects may be accepted at different points in the life cycle of the project: research, laboratory, or creative residencies, or restaging a performance. We also accept authors who are seeking a writing residency. The length of the residency may vary by project and may be anywhere from one to several weeks long.
The studio is equipped with a suspended floor measuring 135 square meters, covered with a dance floor. For circus arts, anchors allow hooking for example cables or a Chinese pole to the ground, but we cannot accommodate aerial hooks.
The distance to the beams is 6 m, and to the ceiling is 7 m. A sound system is available upon request. At this time, there is no lighting system or window covering system available.
The guest house may accommodate from 7 to 10 people, with a fully equipped kitchen and a large common room.
It is possible to organize paid artistic workshops in the schools, excluding school vacations.
